Q&A with Ben Russell, Russell Interiors

Ā

Why Did You Join The Pack?

"So I'm a massive advocate for local, British brands and when I saw Jackal workwear pop up I thought I’d love to get involved. The ethos around Jackal and creating a movement is really interesting and knowing you're part of something that’s bigger than yourself—helping spread the word around Mental Health, tool theft, and positivity within our industry—is truly fantastic. The construction community really is growing and it’s fantastic to be a small part of that."

Ben joined Jackal not just for the quality gear, but because he believes in the movement's bigger purpose. It’s about connection, support, and spreading awareness for issues that matter.

Ā

What Made You Get Into the Trade?

"So I own Russell Interiors which started life as just a small local decorating company in Berkshire, which I did a couple of days a week whilst not on duty as a firefighter. The business has grown beyond what I imagined, now offering bespoke carpentry and decorating alongside full interior renovations (all whilst still being a full-time firefighter). I work closely with leading brands and am now a proud Ambassador providing functional and beautiful spaces for homes and workplaces. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands—taking a raw material and turning it into something amazing. I love bold colour and always encourage my customers to be brave—at the end of the day, it’s only paint."

Ben’s story is one of passion and hard work — balancing two demanding careers while growing his business and pushing creative boundaries in interiors.

Ā

What’s the Weirdest Thing That’s Ever Happened On-Site?

"I’ll be honest, I’ve been very fortunate that I’ve never had anything happen to me on site or at work. That being said, I’ve had hundreds of ā€˜incidents’ during my fire service career which make for funny and interesting stories. Maybe on the social events if you see me, I’ll tell you in person."

Ben saves the best tales for face-to-face moments — a reminder that every trade and service role has its own wild stories to share.

Ā

If You Were a Tool, What Would You Be and Why?

"I’d probably be a multi-tool. I’m a little annoying, a little bit loud. However, I’m really functional, I can do lots of different things and get you out a jam. Plus...if you give me lots of Smarties I vibrate like one too!"

Versatile, energetic, and invaluable — Ben perfectly embodies the multi-tool spirit, layering personality and practicality in one.

Ā

What Jackal Design Do You Want to See Next and Why?

"I’d love to see something that incorporates the workwear idea but also the casual nature of streetwear. Something I can wear outside of work and not feel I’m in workwear, but still has a nod to the construction industry."

Ben’s looking for Jackal to push style boundaries—a collection that feels just as natural off-site as on, blending functionality with lifestyle.

Industry Insights: Ben’s Thoughts on Mental Health & Tool Theft

Ā

Mental Health in Construction

"I am a huge advocate for mental health awareness, and my door/inbox is always open. Within the construction industry, not knowing when your next pay cheque may come, the struggles of finding and securing work, battling tool theft, potential issues on site with no management—all too common, unfortunately. The more people who open up and break the stigma, the better.

I’ve had some bad experiences over my lifetime and needed support from both the NHS and privately to help me cope with day-to-day life. At first I thought the way I felt was normal and had trouble accepting I needed help. But once I accepted it, the light at the end of the tunnel got brighter. Anyone who pushes for mental health awareness gets a huge thumbs up from me.

Changes I’d like: quicker access to support for those in need. But I also find it shameful that some people use the ā€˜MH card’ just for time off—it degrades real struggles and can put people off seeking vital help. I’ve seen it firsthand; it shouldn’t happen."

Ben brings a candid, compassionate perspective on mental health—highlighting the need for quicker support and integrity within the industry.

Ā

Tool Theft

"I’ve never had the issue of tool theft personally (thank god), but I know a lot of people who've suffered business and income loss as a result. The industry needs to look at how tools are distributed once sold. Companies like Selecta DNA are doing it right, and if major tool makers could build trackers into power tools it would help. I’d pay extra for a tool with a tracker that makes it useless if removed.

As for those who steal tools—I get that people have issues, but the damage caused is massive. Seek help, leave the gang, get off the drugs, get a job, and start to appreciate hard work."

Ben’s practical take urges technology upgrades for protection, and a social call for those stealing to choose a better path.

Thanks, Ben!
