🐾 Ed The Spark: Pack Mentality, 🐾

Why We’re Proud to Have Ed in the PackĀ

Eddie Smith—known to most as Ed—is a spark with a mission. He joined the Pack because he shares our belief that tradespeople deserve respect, representation, and real support. After years working in AI, software, and insurance, Ed switched paths to become an electrician, bringing his grounded perspective, sharp humour, and passion for improving mental health awareness to the heart of the trade.Ā

Ā

Q&AĀ

Why did you join The Pack?

ā€œI joined the pack because I support their mission in helping trades. Being involved in other areas of business I noticed that the trade community were being undervalued and facingĀ hard times. The mission of Jackal to donate to a trade charity to ensure support for tradespeople is inspiring.Ā What’sĀ not to like about any businessĀ who’sĀ willing to help the community?ā€Ā

Ed saw in Jackal somethingĀ genuine—aĀ brand doing more than just sellingĀ workwear, butĀ looking out for the people who wear it.Ā

What made you get into the trade?

ā€œI started my career about six months ago to become an electrician. After working in AI, software,Ā securityĀ and insurance, I knew it was now or never to learn a trade. I wanted a skill for life that could be passed to future generations—many years after my dad told me to learn a trade at college… I’mĀ finally taking his advice.Ā Don’tĀ tell him he was right!ā€Ā

A late start, but a powerful one. Ed’s career move provesĀ it’sĀ never too late to follow your instincts and build something solid.Ā

What’s the weirdest thing that’s ever happened to you on-site?

ā€œLuckilyĀ I’veĀ never been a victim of site banter (yet), but in security I saw aĀ rookieĀ sent to buy tartan paint and a left-handed brush. Another funny one—I shouted ā€˜BANG!’ behind an engineer working in a London hotel, and he fell off the ladder in shock. No humans were hurt in the fun!ā€Ā

A sparky sense of humour and solid prank credentials—Ed fits right in with the Pack spirit

If you were a tool, what would you be and why?

ā€œProbably a tape measure—I need some extraĀ inchesĀ but I’m guaranteed to wind up!ā€Ā

A perfect mix of honesty and banter, just how we like it.Ā

What Jackal design do you want to see next and why?

ā€œSomething electrifying—maybe aĀ Jackal being mischievous with electrics. Or a boat on the water filled with brooms… leaving for France.ā€Ā

Do you have a question for The Pack we can put out from The Jackal account?

ā€œWhat’s the biggest tip or advice you’d give a trainee or apprentice?ā€Ā

Great fuel for trade wisdom and a conversation every apprentice should hear.Ā

Industry Insights:Ā  on Key Trade Issues

Mental Health in Construction

ā€œSuch an important topic. Society is changing its views, especially about men talking andĀ opening up, butĀ there’sĀ still a long way to go. We should be educating the public about why tradespeople struggle—likeĀ late paymentsĀ from customers and the knock-on effects.Ā
Mental health courses,Ā trainingĀ and advice should all be free if we want real change.Ā I’veĀ faced plenty of barriers myself and had daily thoughts of suicide leading to dark places, but every time, something or someone helps me reset.Ā That’sĀ the message—open your mind to wanting help and it will find you.ā€Ā

Ed’s lived experience shows how vital open conversations and accessible support are—not just for those struggling, but for the whole trade community.Ā

Tool Theft in the Building Trade

ā€œLuckilyĀ I’veĀ not had any tools stolen, but working with insurance and trades,Ā I’veĀ seen how big the issue is. So much is being done behind the scenes, but we need to keep supporting each other, standingĀ togetherĀ and acting as a community. We can all help by protecting our equipment—prevention is better than cure.ā€Ā

For Ed, the best defence is teamwork—looking out for one another and keeping the trade united.Ā

Ā

Why Ed StrengthensĀ TheĀ PackĀ

Ed Smith brings energy, empathy, and authenticity to the Pack. His passion for learning, his willingness to speak openly about mental health, and his drive to make a difference in the trade make him a stand-out member of the Jackal community. From championing awareness to celebrating good humour on-site, Ed reminds us exactly what Pack Mentality is all about—support, resilience, and purpose.Ā
