How Did You Get Into the Trade?
Scottās story in construction began young:
"Iāve been in the street over 20 years. I started out at 15 in a bench joinery shop on the outskirts of Gloucestershire. At 16, I wanted to be a cabinet maker and attended a small, exclusive cabinetry show at Cheltenham Ladies College. I quickly realised how tough it was to break into that industry and, unable to find work, settled into a full-time carpentry course. I impressed my college lecturer so much he actively found me employment. I started my own business at 18, and here I am at 36, still chipping away.
I owe my ambition to my grandparents, both in construction and still running businesses in their late 70s. No quitting, no excusesājust get on with it."
Ā
Weirdest On-Site Moment
"Oh gosh, so many, but a personal standout was flashing my customer! Iād been suffering with a bad back and had cupping therapy, which left perfectly circular, strange-looking bruises. I was showing my apprentice my back, shoulders, and yes, my bumāwhen the client walked in. Both myself and Claire, the client, were absolutely mortified!"
Ā
If You Were a Tool, What Would You Be?
"Any one of Daveās toolsābecause theyāre still in cellophane and wrapped up in his van. Iād enjoy the long breakā¦"
Ā
Dream Jackal Design
"Iād love to see some autism awareness merch. Slick, cool designs that keep it fashionable on site. Remember, you only get one chance at a first impression."
Ā
Scottās Question for The Pack
"Why are we all on social media? Fame or promotion?"

Industry Insights
Ā
Mental Health in Construction
Scott wants to see mental health support normalised in the industry:
"Posters up in merchants, help thatās readily available and everywhere. To combat a fire, you flood it! Things have improved, but thereās still more to do."
Ā
Tool Theft in Construction
Scott has experienced tool theft firsthand:
"Iāve lost everything in the past and slowly rebuilt over the years. Other than a fantastic insurance policy, which is just sensible business, thereās not much else. Itās sad we have to rely on insurance, but itās the only thing that really helps right now. The government and police need to do moreāharsher sentencing and real deterrents. Long gone are the days of bobbies on the beat; I canāt remember the last time I saw a police officer just walking around."
