🐾 Pack Mentality Spotlight: Sonny Pope – Building Community in the Construction Industry 🐾

Meet Sonny Pope (@its_always_sonny_onsite), a second-generation carpenter, lifelong grafter, and a proud member of the Jackal Workwear Pack. Sonny’s journey through the construction industry is a testament to the power of community, resilience, and the importance of supporting each other in the trades.

Why Sonny Joined The Pack

Sonny first discovered Jackal Workwear through our unique workwear designs, but it was the Pack Mentality and the sense of unity within the trades community that truly drew him in. “We’re all in the same boat in this industry—we should stand together, not be divided.” For Sonny, joining The Pack is about building connections and supporting fellow tradespeople.

Getting Into Carpentry: A Family Tradition

Sonny’s story in the construction industry began with his father, a skilled carpenter. “From as far back as I can remember, I was on site with my dad at weekends, half-terms, and bank holidays. I loved it!” Although he initially pursued architecture and building studies at university, Sonny quickly realised that hands-on work was where he truly belonged. Thanks to his dad’s encouragement and a well-timed apprenticeship, Sonny found his place in carpentry and never looked back.

Funniest and Weirdest On-Site Story

Life on a construction site is never dull. Sonny recalls one memorable April Fools’ Day when his best mate called claiming he’d shot himself with a Paslode nail gun. Thinking it was a joke, Sonny brushed it off—only to find out later it was true! The story made the rounds on site, and years later, Sonny overheard it being retold, not realising he was the guy on the other end of the phone. “Small world, good laugh!”

If Sonny Was a Tool…

Sonny says he’d be a multi-tool: “I’m pretty noisy when the radio’s playing a good tune.” Versatile, reliable, and always ready to get the job done—just like a true tradesperson.

Dream Jackal Workwear Design

Sonny’s ideal Jackal Workwear design? “A Jackal with some rafters on his shoulder and a skill saw in hand—like Schwarzenegger in Commando carrying the tree log and a chainsaw. Classic film, classic vibes.” It’s a nod to strength, resilience, and the iconic spirit of the trades.

Sonny’s Question for The Pack

“If you could go back in time and give yourself some advice about your trade when you were an apprentice, what would it be?”

Industry Insights from the Construction Community

Mental Health in Construction

Sonny recognises the challenges facing mental health in the construction industry. “You’re almost expected to be tough as nails, and when you’re not, it can be seen as a negative. But after 20+ years in construction, I see things changing for the better.” Raising awareness and supporting mental health in construction is crucial for building a stronger, more resilient trades community.

Tool Theft: A Tradesperson’s Perspective

Tool theft remains a major issue in the construction industry. Sonny shares, “Having my tools stolen years ago was devastating. Now I take my tools inside every night and never leave them in the van if I’m unsure about the area.” He’s encouraged by increased police action at boot sales and hopes for harsher sentences for thieves. “Tool theft destroys lives. What other industry makes you buy your own kit, do the job, wait to get paid, and then worry about getting robbed? No wonder there’s a shortage in the trades.”
