đž Pack Mentality Blog: Spotlight on Stuart McLean of SMcLeanDecor đž

Welcome to Pack Mentality, our weekly blog feature that celebrates the incredible members of The Pack. At Jackal Workwear, we believe in building a community that supports, inspires, and connects tradespeople from all walks of life. Each week, we shine a spotlight on one memberâs story, highlighting their journey, insights, and contributions to the industry.
This month, weâre shining the spotlight on Stuart McLean-a painter, decorator, and all-around champion for the trade based in Edinburgh. With nearly two decades of experience, Stuart is known for sharing decorating tips, tricks, and plenty of laughs online, but itâs his commitment to raising awareness for the industry and supporting others that really sets him apart.Â
Why Did You Join The Pack?
"Iâm all for anything that shines a light on the construction industry! Thereâs a real shortage of skilled workers out there, so raising awareness is more important than ever. Plus, the fact that Jackal supports charities as part of the mission just makes it even better."Â
Â
What Made You Get Into the Trade?
"Some of my earliest memories are of wanting to be a painter and decorator like my dad. As I got older, that faded and I actually wanted to be a vet, but life had other plans. I needed to start earning, and my dad offered me a job at his firm. From day one, I fell in love with the trade and the camaraderie on site. Iâve never looked back since."Â
Â
Whatâs the Weirdest Thing Thatâs Ever Happened to You On-Site?
"I know you said keep it clean but⌠I was once sent to a property to carry out some customer care work. The site manager told me no one would be in and handed me the key theyâd left behind. I gave the usual knock, no answer! So I let myself in and started checking over the job. When I opened the bedroom door⌠letâs just say someone was mid action and very much at home. They didnât even notice me standing there in absolute shock! I quietly backed out and had to carry that awkward moment with me ever since."Â
Â
If You Were a Tool, What Would You Be and Why?
"Iâd be a paintbrush-always in the thick of it and usually covered in a bit of chaos. Not always the cleanest, but gets the job done!"Â "
Â
What Jackal Design Do You Want to See Next and Why?
"I feel like Iâve already inspired one đ But if weâre talking new ideas, how about a Jackal in a kilt? A nod to the Scottish Jackals in the Pack (Jockals if you will đ ). Tartan and tough, whatâs not to love?"Â "

Your Question for the Next Pack Member
if you could swap lives with one person, alive or dead, for one day. Who would be and why?

Mental Health in Construction
"Iâve had my own ups and downs with mental health, going out on my own was both a blessing and a challenge. I left the stress of site life behind, but found myself dealing with the loneliness of working solo and the pressure of finding my own work. Whatâs made a real difference is connecting with like minded people on social media! Theyâre always checking in, and itâs created a bit of a support network. Breaking the stigma around talking about our struggles is key, and things like The Talking Tradesman Podcast are doing a great job of opening up those conversations.
Tool Theft
"Luckily, my only run in with tool theft was when a site I was working on got broken into. They rummaged through my toolbox, then clearly decided a painterâs tools werenât worth nicking and left them scattered on the floor! I got off lightly, but Iâve seen the real damage it causes! People losing their livelihoods overnight. Iâm 100% behind tougher punishments for tool thieves. Itâs not just gear theyâre stealing, itâs peopleâs ability to earn a living."Â
Final Word
Stuartâs journey proves that being part of The Pack is about more than just work-itâs about lifting each other up, sharing the real stories, and making the industry better for everyone. Weâre proud to have him with us and canât wait to see what he inspires next.Â
